Summer was one of the most carefree times of my life. Even though I knew the likelihood was that it would be Japanese made, it just looked too expensive to be one of the regular models, and I hardly dared ask the price. It was listed in the Fender catalogue in just three colours: Throughout the ’80s and early ’90s, I never saw a black one in the UK – either in person, during many, many shop visits, or listed in any dealer ad.

I’m sure I’m right in saying that during the ’80s, the very large Birmingham dealer – Musical Exchanges – only ever stocked these Teles new in Candy Apple Red. The Fender USA Teles had ceased to be available after the American Fullerton factory closed in , so from , Fender Japan had to fill that void whilst the new Fender Corona plant steadily set itself in motion over the next couple of years. The edgebound ’62 Custom Tele – one such premium quality guitar – was completely new in the Fender MIJ line in , and roughly took the place of the Squier JV Series ’52 reissue in the market.

Even though the ’62 Custom was a lot more expensive than, and obviously very different from the Squier ’52, the build standards and desirability were the same. During the revamp, the Squier Tele was downgraded to a cut-cost spec , and no longer had the status of the JV ’52 reissue. The ‘Custom’ element was purely cosmetic.

History[ edit ] Formation and early years —85 [ edit ] The creative and song-writing force throughout Spacemen 3’s history were Peter Kember and Jason Pierce. Pierce was in a band called Indian Scalp, but he left them near the end of in order to collaborate with Kember. The two guitarists recruited drummer Tim Morris, who played with a couple of other bands and had a rehearsal space at his parental home which they used.

Shortly afterwards they were joined by an acquaintance, Pete Bain , on bass. Morris and Bain had previously played together in a band called Noise on Independent Street. Pierce handled lead vocal duties. Now a 4-piece, the band originally adopted the name The Spacemen. Kember and Pierce recruited a replacement drummer, Nicholas “Natty” Brooker. They continued without a bassist and Pierce would regularly return to Rugby for rehearsals.

In early , they only performed at a few local, low key venues.

The fine folks at Jasmine Records UK can always be counted on for fine reissues: The bad news is that for some artists this is necessary since so many masters were destroyed in a warehouse fire some years ago. The good news is that Humphead has gotten much better at doing this and all of my recent acquisitions from them have been quite good, if not always perfect. Not only does this album give you all of the truck driving hits caveat: Most of the tracks have been available digitally over the years, but the MCA tracks have been missing in recent years.

These are needle drop but the soiund ranges from very good to excellent. There are a few tracks from the MCA years that have not previously been available in a digital format, but most of the material will be familiar to Gene Watson fans. Of course, if you buy this collection and are not already a Gene Watson fan, you will become one very quickly.
